Just... not an excellent book. I really don't understand all of the hype. I thought it was terribly boring, completely predictable, and there were large sections that I found wholly unnecessary. Both Blomkvist and Lisbeth are ridiculously unlikeable characters - Blomkvist because he has sex with everything that walks (including Lisbeth even though he's twice her age and wonders if she has Aspergers), which really only serves to take up space rather than actually drive the plot and Lisbeth because she's got no personality whatsoever.
And then! After much painful toiling, when you've finally confirmed that who you thought dunnit actually did it, you still have another 150 plus freaking pages to go!
I think it's safe to say that I won't be continuing this series.

ReplyDeleteBlah. Several people told me it was better. But several people also insisted I read this book because I'd "love it."
ReplyDeleteI mean - I just can't get past the fact that he says, I think she has Aspergers and then CONTINUES TO SLEEP WITH HER. So you're basically effing a kid with autism? Great. Sounds good to me.
Oh my God I TOTALLY agree. To be honest though, I couldn't through it. I was just soooo bored. Would rather not waste my time. I guess I don't get the hype either ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy book club read this and most of them loved it. My review was remarkably like yours. I actually did a search on predictable and boring and came up with this review. So, they ask me why is it so popular? Lots of girl sex and violence and crimes against women..of course it is popular. It feeds into the male ego and unfortunately a lot of females iconic interpertation of power. I think the author knew one strong woman with a sad past and formed all of his noteworthy women characters after that person. Of course, all of these wounded, strong women had a weakness for the main male character who was ..and again my evaluation of him nearly mirrors yours?? I don;t get the facsination and Lisbeth was only weird to conformists living in plush bubbles. Thx
